My mother was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma at age 54 on my 26th birthday. At that time, I was working as a registered radiographer in the radiology department at a local hospital. 

With the support of the medical team and radiologist, I had the opportunity to perform and review her diagnostic imaging to ensure the cancer had not metastasized to other organs. 

Fortunately, the scans confirmed that the cancer was localized. 

However, due to the aggressive nature of the disease the treatment plan included a left breast lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node removal, followed by twelve months of chemotherapy and six and a half weeks of radiation therapy. 

Witnessing my mother battle with breast cancer and channeling that experience into a specialized career in breast imaging reflects both resilience and deep commitment to making a difference.  

My dedication to understanding breast cancer development and prevention not only addresses my own concerns but also helps me to educate and support others facing similar uncertainties.  

By specializing in breast imaging, my contribution to early detection efforts can save lives and provide clarity to those navigating the disease.
